Dishwasher prewash
You need the dirt to get the good active.
Without food, the enzymes have nothing to latch on to.
So, basically, detergents won't know they need to clean if there isn't enough grime to tell them".
The rule of thumb is that one should scrap off all excess food from your plates before loading it into your dishwasher but don't actually clean the dishes before stacking them into the dishwasher because this will just create the opposite effect of having clean hygienic dishes.
The above theory is certainly food for thought, I would love to hear from you what are your thoughts and experiences.

Fuchsware refrigerator restoration
How awesome was this to work on this vintage Fuchsware refrigerator, it took me back to the early days when appliances were built to last and manufacturers still had pride in their products.
Carl Julius Fuchs was born in 1904 and at the age of 14 he started his career as Plumber artisan. During the recession he was trained employed by Hoffman brothers in Johannesburg
CJ Fuchs first workshop was in 149 Marshall street in Johannesburg. The workshop was an old stable that has been converted into a shed. The business was called CJ Fuchs-Reistered Plumber & Sheet Metal Specialist.
They mainly focus on spray painting and plate-marking. During World war 2 the also manufactured components for the military.
In 1948 Fuchs ventured in domestic appliances production under the License of Westing House Electric International an American company.
The business was then relocated to Alrode road in Alberton. The new line of Appliances that was produced in this factory was called "Fuchsware" Appliances.
They produced Fuchware appliances like Electric Stove's,
Electric Refrigerators,
Geysers
Circuit breakers
Enamelworks
and
Stainless steel ware
Later on they produced electronic systems and colour television's.
In 1972 Carl Fuchs passed away and the company was sold to
Barlow Rand 1976 and that's where the story ends.
Years later I now had the opportunity (thanks Ilze) to work where the old masters work.

Things happen - appliances go on the blink
Most modern day refrigerator are so called frost-free unit.
The words "frost-free is not entirely accurate to describe the new refrigerator units.
The new refrigerator still make ice but it's hidden away so one cannot see the actual ice (frost).
You might ask;
"I the ice part is hidden away somewhere in cabinet of the refrigerator - how does it manage to cool everything thing in the refrigerator"
Good question!
Air movement
Air then gets sucked through the condenser unit (ice-bank) little canals. The cold air is then blown out at the top section of the fridge threw little vents. And because cold air is heavier than hot air it drops down to the bottom of the refrigerator again.
This whole air-movement cycle is made possible by one little fan-motor.
Just another example of how the little guy makes the difference.

Another gemini thermo fan oven bits the dust

Actually that is wrong the Defy Gemini multifunction thermo fan oven did not bite the dust but rather it bit white powder.
White powder everywhere! This is how it looks when the bake element explodes, fortunately the powder is harmful and you don't have to dump your Roast. Read more about the powder here . . . .

Inverters are the future!
O.K! come back this is not another boring post about something you are never going to use. Inverter's are here to stay and it is going to become a part of every household.
Over the year our National power supplier has work hard to building themselves a reputation as a total unreliable service provider. The municipalities are ripping their paying clients on their power bills to makeup for their inefficiencies.

It not only that power suppliers has become totally unreliable but fossil fuel and the damage it does to our environment, has made it a matter of urgency to find an alternative power suppliers.
Why would you ever need a power inverter?
If you’re not a active outdoor camper you might be needing a inverter to watch you favorite soapy on televisions when the power is down. Sick people need inverter's to run their medical equipment in case of a power outage.
Up to this stage the authorities has try everything to discourage people from generating their power. With the anti fossil fuel movement that is growing daily, the world has started to looking for alternative power source.
Some of the main alternative energy source area;
- Sun - solar energy threw the use of solar panels converting the sun's heat to electricity
- Water - perpetual motion is becoming big to harness the oceans waves. Water-turbines has already been in use for many years.
- Wind - Wind power are very unpredictable and unreliable but if one use it with solar energy if becomes more reliable.
Power inverter is an electronic device that changes direct current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC)
- Alternating Current (AC) - is electricity that reverse all the time (alternating), it is supplied through a national grid to home and businesses. Appliances like washing machines, microwaves and stoves run on alternating current. Most AC power is supplied in pure sine wave (I will tell you more about sine wave shortly)
- Direct Current (DC) - is a electric current that flows in one direction. Used in portable appliances like laptops, radios, cameras and touches. The main source of DC power is batteries.
- Sine Waves - Power has a frequency that can be seen and measure on a oscillator that looks a wave. Human ears can hear pure sine waves. Sine waves just looking at the way they interact with other Waves (devices).
A Modified sinewave is square and tend to cause interferences on other devices.
The main takeaway is to remember that if the electric current is not pure it will cause disturbances on your radio, television and cell phone.
Inverter's have either a modified sine wave (square wave) or pure sine wave output. Now that you know more about the workings and uses of a inverter, I will tell you more where the inverter fits into the alternative power system.
- Power Generator Source; - Solar panels, wind and water turbine
- Voltage Regulator; - This unit is to regulate the power flow to the batteries
- Batteries; - 12 Volt or 24 V DC power
- Inverter; - Changes 12 Volt power to 220 Volt
- Modified sine wave (step square) inverter's has limitations compared to a pure sine wave inverter that can run any type of equipment from oxygen concentrators to variable speed control power tools. are smooth actually very fascinating and one can learn so much from them .

Whirlpool Toploader Washing machine
Apart from the old Hitachi toploader washing machines Whirlpool are the best domestic toploader washing machine on the mark. (I'm not getting paid for saying this). The only thing that is pulling this product down is their poor aftermarket and part service
The greatest advantage of the whirlpool toploader is that there aren't many parts to service. In fact the only part that has to be replace regularly is the rubber coupler between the gearbox and motor.

Clients ask me all the time when they should service their Whirlpool toploader washing machine and their is no specific time frame but I recommend every 5 years. If you do big laundry loads (eg blankets) regularly then you should replace the couplers more often.
The bad thing about a worn-out coupler is that sometimes when it goes on the blink it does warn you and by the time you realize something is not right, the motor has over heated. Replace the main motor you are talking big money.
Symptoms of a worn-out Coupler
Fortunately there are little tell tale signs that warn you that things are not right in the washing machine.
- The washing machine agitator starts getting slower while its washing
- Grinding noise while washing machine working especially during the spin-cycle
- Laundry drains but the machine doesn't spin.
