If you had to repair a major appliance recently, you have probably noticed that most modern machines are build with obsolescence making them less feasible to repair comparing to the older, heavy-duty gear from twenty years ago. Fortunately, a massive global movement is forcing international electronics giants to change how they design their machines, shifting away from sealed, unfixable units towards modular engineering.
How the global brands are responding right now:
  • Bosch & Siemens: These German engineering staples are actively expanding their global availability of original spare parts. They have committed to stocking functional electronic and mechanical components for up to 10 years after a model's production run ends.
  • Samsung & LG: Known for complex digital displays and smart features, both brands are updating their software ecosystems. Samsung’s SmartThings and LG’s ThinQ apps are adding deeper self-diagnostic modes, letting you pinpoint exact mechanical failures before a technician even arrives.
  • Whirlpool & Maytag: This manufacturing giant is redesigning its internal cabinet layouts. The latest washers and dryers feature front-access panels, allowing quick access to drive belts and pumps without stripping down the entire machine.
  • Smeg & Miele: Premium brands are leaning into modular circuit boards. Instead of forcing consumers to replace a massive, expensive electronic control network, they are designing sub-boards that can be swapped independently if a localized failure happens.

On our local shores, South African retail shelves are seeing a heavy influx of multi-functional and space-saving appliances. Brands are competing fiercely to catch the eye of local buyers who want maximum utility without overloading their kitchen layouts or prepaid meters:
  • Defy: SA’s home-grown brand has aggressively expanded its premium Maestro and built-in kitchen lines. They are focusing heavily on slimline, multi-zone hobs and high-efficiency ovens designed to pre-heat rapidly, minimizing the draw on home energy grids.
  • Hisense: Known for excellent value, Hisense has launched a new range of multi-door refrigerators featuring adjustable cooling zones. You can instantly convert a freezer compartment into a standard fridge zone on the fly, depending on your seasonal storage needs.
  • Beko & Panasonic: Beko is making a massive push into local laundry spaces with its AquaWave drum technology, which mimics gentle wave motions to prevent clothing wear. Meanwhile, Panasonic is targeting small kitchens with high-powered inverter microwaves that cook evenly while drawing a fraction of the starting current used by traditional units.
  • Whirlpool: The local distributor has rolled out an updated range of Supreme Clean dishwashers, utilizing high-pressure power jets to blast away tough grease without requiring a separate pre-rinse cycle.
πŸ”§ Pine’s Workshop Insight: The Hidden Filter Threatening Your Dishwasher
In my workshop here in PE, I get regular calls for dishwashers that either smell terrible, leave a cloudy film on glasses, or refuse to drain water at the end of a cycle. The owners often worry that the main pump is broken or that the electronic board has glitched.
Nine times out of ten, the fix takes less than five minutes, and it is a job you can do yourself: cleaning the sump filter.
Inside every modern dishwasher from brands like Bosch, Defy, and Samsung, there is a removable mesh filtration cylinder right at the bottom of the tub under the spray arms. It is designed to catch food particles, seeds, and grease before they reach the delicate drain pump impeller.
This filter often gets ignored for months:
  1. Old food debris breaks down, causing a foul odor that transfers directly to your clean dishes during the steam cycle.
  2. The restricted water flow forces the wash motor to work twice as hard, overheating the internal components.
  3. Grease builds up inside the pressure switch, causing the machine to throw a draining error code and freeze up mid-cycle.

Defy tumble dryer not turning

When your tumble dryer inner drum isn't rotating and only making a soft humming noise, it is possible that it could be the capacitor. 


The capacitor has suffered a catastrophic thermal and electrical failure (meltdown). 

The dark, bubbled material pushing through the plastic casing is the melted internal polypropylene dielectric film, tar, or electrolyte paste that boiled and ruptured out under immense heat and pressure.


Primary Causes of This Failure

  • Voltage Spikes or Surges: Exposure to an electrical surge higher than its rated peak AC voltage breaks down the thin internal insulation layers. This creates a direct short circuit inside the capacitor, causing immediate overheating and rupture.

  • Mechanical or Motor Strain: If the electric motor it connects to is seized, jammed, or under heavy mechanical load, the motor draws excessive current. This forces the capacitor to stay energized far longer or harder than designed, causing it to overheat and fail.

  • Age and Natural Degradation: Capacitors have a finite operational lifespan. Over time, the internal electrolyte breaks down, its equivalent series resistance (ESR) increases, and the normal heat generated during everyday operation eventually causes it to break down completely.

  • Defective Centrifugal Switch (Start Capacitors): If this is a start capacitor, it is designed to drop out of the circuit via a centrifugal switch within seconds of the motor starting. If that switch sticks closed, continuous power will rapidly boil and melt the component. 

Before installing a replacement capacitor, ensure you turn off all power and inspect the connected motor to verify that its bearings spin freely and that it is not mechanically locked up.

In my workshop here in Port Elizabeth, the nature of appliance repair has completely flipped. Ten years ago, I spent my days fixing mechanical belts, broken pumps, and worn-out carbon brushes. Today, the single most common item sitting on my workbench is a fried Electronic Control Board (PCB).

The global appliance industry is transitioning toward the Matter Protocol framework. This universal smart-home standard ensures that major appliances from completely different brands can seamlessly communicate inside a single ecosystem without requiring proprietary software. 

How the brands stack up right now:

  • Samsung & LG: These two rivals have expanded their cross-brand compatibility. You can now monitor an LG ThinQ smart dishwasher or air conditioner directly through a Samsung SmartThings home hub interface. 

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, & KitchenAid: This major manufacturing family is increasingly introducing automated diagnostics that pair with voice-activation networks like Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

In my workshop here in Port Elizabeth, the single most common failure I see in modern appliances isn't a worn-out mechanical motor or a broken pump—it is a fried Electronic Control Board (PCB).
