International Market
I. IFA 2026 shows the real innovation battle has shifted to smalls and floorcare.
Post-show analysis from IFA 2026 in Berlin points to a clear shift: major players like Electrolux (via its AEG brand), Bosch, and Hisense poured new investment into small kitchen appliances this year, while brands like Dreame pushed further into personal care with hair tools and LED face masks. Glass, PFAS-free containers are also becoming standard in air fryers as manufacturers respond to health-conscious buyers.
II. LG pushes into personal care with AirDew.
LG is capitalising on strong average selling prices in the hair care category with its AirDew range, expanding the brand's footprint well beyond its traditional white-goods base as it prepares a wider international rollout.
III. US market data shows a split between value and premium strategies.
OpenBrand's Q1 2026 US appliance market analysis shows LG leading in both units and dollar sales, while Frigidaire posted the best shopper close rate of any major brand at 65%. In-store buying also rebounded to over three-quarters of all purchases, reversing a holiday-season shift toward online.
South African Market
I. The local market keeps climbing — and diversifying.
South Africa's home appliances market is projected to grow from $3.67 billion this year to $4.77 billion by 2031, with Defy (now under Arçelik), Whirlpool, Hisense, Samsung, and LG named as the market's major players — alongside a growing presence from Bosch and Midea.
II. Whirlpool leans on quiet-drive tech and hygiene features to hold its ground.
As competition intensifies locally, Whirlpool is differentiating with quiet-drive motors and antimicrobial gasket linings on its laundry range — a hygiene-focused pitch that's becoming more common across the industry as brands look for ways to stand out beyond price and energy ratings alone.

This week's appliance: Tumble Dryers
Check both the lint filter and the outside vent hose every few loads, not just the filter. Most people only ever clean the internal lint trap and forget the outlet — a partially blocked vent hose is one of the most common reasons a dryer suddenly takes two cycles to dry a load that used to take one, and it's also a genuine fire risk if left long enough.
Recycling reminder: China's government-backed appliance trade-in scheme moved over 27 million appliance units this year alone, showing just how much impact a well-run trade-in incentive can have at scale. Closer to home, remember that Samsung's local trade-in programme accepts over 6,000 eligible devices for responsible recycling — not just Samsung products — so it's worth checking before an old appliance ends up gathering dust in a garage.
