This Week's Main Insight: Small Appliances Had a Bigger September Than the Big Ones

International Market

I. Dyson, SMEG, and Le Creuset all made design headlines this month.
September's design news cycle was dominated by smaller appliances: Dyson unveiled three new launches including the Airsmooth styling brush and a toothbrush with a built-in inspection camera, SMEG released a new retro-styled air fryer built for countertop display, and Le Creuset added a new "Bleu Riviera" colourway across its cookware range. It's a reminder that plenty of appliance innovation now happens well outside the fridge-and-washer category.

II. Roborock unveiled its most complete cleaning ecosystem yet at IFA 2026.
Building on the momentum from Berlin, Roborock showed off a home-cleaning lineup spanning indoor floors, gardens, and even pools — pushing robotic cleaning further into territory that used to be entirely manual.

III. Tariff pressure is pushing prices up again, this time in India.
Major Indian manufacturers confirmed price increases of 5–8% on air conditioners and 3–4% on washing machines, refrigerators, and TVs from 1 October, citing a stronger dollar and a 25–35% jump in copper costs. It's the same tariff and commodity-cost story that's been pushing prices up across multiple markets this year — worth watching whether South African pricing follows the same pattern into the festive season.

South African Market

I. "Black Friday" in South Africa now basically starts in October.
Industry analysis shows Black Friday has stretched from a single day into a season that effectively kicks off in early October, with AI-assisted shopping tools now playing a bigger role in how South Africans compare deals across Game, Makro, Samsung, and other major appliance retailers. If you're planning an appliance purchase, the real deals may already be starting well before the official date on 27 November.

II. Local retail competition is intensifying beyond the usual names.
With international entrants like Amazon.co.za, Temu, and Shein increasingly competing for South African shoppers' attention, established appliance retailers are being pushed to sharpen both pricing and online visibility — good news for anyone patient enough to shop around this quarter.

From Me

This week's appliance: Air Fryers

With SMEG and other brands pushing air fryers as countertop-display pieces this year, it's worth remembering the basics still apply: clean the basket and tray after every use (built-up oil residue is the main cause of smoke and off-tastes), and never line the basket with paper towel or unpunched foil — it can block airflow and become a fire hazard. A beautiful appliance still needs the boring maintenance.

Recycling reminder: If Black Friday season has you eyeing a replacement appliance, ask the retailer directly whether they offer an old-appliance collection or trade-in as part of the sale — many South African retailers, including Makro, will take the old unit off your hands responsibly if you simply ask at the point of purchase.
