International Market
I. Haier dethrones the old guard in the latest US satisfaction study.
The 2026 ACSI Household Appliance and Electronics Study named Haier (which now includes GE, Haier, and Hotpoint) the new industry leader with a score of 82, topping four of six appliance categories including ranges, washers, and refrigerators. Whirlpool held on to the top spot for dishwashers and dryers, showing the appliance satisfaction race is now genuinely split between brands rather than dominated by one.
II. Samsung doubles down on "AI Home Companion" positioning.
Samsung's newly launched 2026 Bespoke AI range leans hard into AI Vision, built-in security, and features like a dedicated pet-care wash cycle — part of a broader push to make appliances feel less like static machines and more like an adaptive part of the home.
III. Premium cooking brands are packing more into single appliances.
Frigidaire's Gallery range now includes a slide-in range that doubles as a 750-degree, no-preheat pizza oven, while Thermador continues refining "freedom induction" cooktops that let pots go anywhere on the surface. The common thread across Bosch, Miele, and Fisher & Paykel this year: fewer separate gadgets, more multi-function units doing several jobs at once.
South African Market
I. Massmart is quietly reshaping where South Africans buy appliances.
Massmart is reportedly converting shrinking Game store locations into small-format Makro outlets, following a steady decline in Game's footprint from 150 stores in 2019 to around 102 today. For appliance buyers, this likely means more Makro-branded appliance floors popping up in malls that previously only had Game.
II. A load-shedding-free year is starting to change what people buy.
Eskom confirmed it carried South Africa through an entire load-shedding-free winter in 2026, with seven provinces now completely free of load reduction too. It's a genuine shift after years of backup-power-first buying — worth watching whether it slows demand for solar-hybrid and inverter-ready appliances now that the urgency has eased.

This week's appliance: Dishwashers
If your dishwasher is leaving a white, chalky film on glasses, it's very likely hard water mineral buildup rather than a fault with the machine. Run a hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar in the bottom rack once a month, and check that your rinse-aid compartment isn't running empty — most people only ever refill the detergent and forget the rinse aid, which is what actually stops the spotting.
Recycling reminder: With Massmart's retail footprint shifting, it's worth remembering Makro remains one of the easiest South African retailers to drop off an old appliance for recycling when you buy a new one — always ask in-store whether a take-back or trade-in option is running before you haul an old fridge or washer to the curb yourself.
