The Challenge: Fridge Stuck in Defrost Mode

This classic refrigerator unit rolled into the workshop with a common but frustrating symptom: the interior lights and fans were working, but the main compressor was completely dead, causing the fridge to warm right up. The owner suspected the entire cooling system was shot, but a methodical diagnostic check pointed to something much simpler.

The Solution: Replacing the Worn Mechanical Timer

Unlike brand-new fridges that rely on digital computer boards, older dependable models use a rugged mechanical defrost timer. This little motor-driven clock runs for about 6 to 8 hours before actively switching power away from the compressor to turn on the defrost heater for 20 minutes. Upon testing, I found the internal plastic gears had stripped over time. The clock had ticked its last tick and got permanently stuck in defrost mode, leaving the compressor indefinitely starved of power. I popped in a fresh mechanical timer unit and manually advanced the dial to trigger a clean startup. The compressor instantly kicked back to life and began drawing its proper cooling cycle.
