This Week's Main Insight: Efficiency Is Becoming the New Baseline, Not a Premium Feature


International Market

I. LG makes high-efficiency the standard, not the flagship perk.
At IFA 2026 in Berlin (4–8 September), LG Electronics is extending its top-tier energy-saving technology — previously reserved for flagship models — across its broader laundry, refrigerator, and dishwasher lineup, with many models exceeding A-grade ratings. The message from LG's Home Appliance Solution Company is clear: energy efficiency is moving from a premium differentiator to a portfolio-wide expectation, which should mean more affordable efficient options trickling down for everyone, not just top-spec buyers.

II. LG's Fit & Max design language spreads beyond fridges.
Also ahead of IFA 2026, LG confirmed its "Fit Space, Max Life" concept — previously limited to select refrigerators — is expanding into washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers. The idea is simple: smaller footprint, same or greater usable capacity. Worth watching if a client's kitchen or laundry space is tight but they don't want to compromise on load size.

III. Component supply is shifting closer to home.
Following on from GE Appliances' announcement that its next-generation connected laundry line will run on US-built Texas Instruments microcontrollers from 2027, more manufacturers are re-examining where their smart electronics get made. For repair techs, that likely means new control-board part numbers and diagnostics to learn as these units start reaching service life in a few years.

South African Market

I. KIC answers rising energy costs with a new efficiency-led washer.
In July, KIC South Africa (a Whirlpool brand) launched the KFL 812 GR — an 8kg front-loader with Steam+ and an A+++ energy rating. It's a clear sign that established local brands are leaning on efficiency-per-kWh as their main pitch against imported competitors, at a time when electricity tariffs remain the biggest factor in local buying decisions.

II. Hisense's Western Cape factory is its buffer against global price hikes.
While Samsung and other global brands warn of price increases from rising component costs, Hisense says its 27,000m² Atlantis facility — producing around 500,000 fridges and a million TVs a year — is helping it keep South African pricing stable by cutting reliance on imports. It's a good reminder for clients asking why some brands' prices are moving while others aren't: local manufacturing footprint matters more than ever right now.

This week's appliance: Refrigerators

Vacuum or brush down the condenser coils at the back or underneath your fridge every three to six months. Dust buildup on the coils forces the compressor to work harder to shed heat, which quietly pushes up your electricity bill and shortens compressor life — the same efficiency story brands like LG and KIC are chasing with new tech, you can get part of that saving for free with a five-minute clean.

Recycling reminder: LG South Africa runs a free e-waste collection and recycling service for old LG appliances through its Circular Energy partnership — a legal requirement under SA's EPR Regulations that most households never actually use. Samsung's trade-in scheme covers over 6,000 eligible devices too, not just phones. And it's worth knowing: since 2021, it's been illegal to send e-waste like old fridges, washers, and microwaves to landfill in South Africa — eWASA-licensed recyclers (Desco, Reclite, Wasteplan) and E-Waste Africa's 200+ drop-off points take household appliances free of charge instead.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore a Worn Coupler on Your Whirlpool Washer

If your Whirlpool top-loader fills with water and drains just fine, but won't agitate or spin, don't assume the worst. Before you start pricing a new washer, there's a small, inexpensive part worth checking first: the motor coupler.

What the Coupler Actually Does

On direct-drive Whirlpool washers (the same design used across Kenmore, Maytag, Estate, and Roper machines), the motor coupler is the flexible link connecting the motor shaft to the transmission. It's deliberately built to be the weakest point in that drive system — a sacrificial part. If the drum jams or the load is too heavy, the coupler is designed to break before the motor or transmission takes the damage instead. That's a smart design, but it also means the coupler is a wear item, not a "lasts forever" component.

Signs Your Coupler Is on Its Way Out

You don't need to be a technician to spot the warning signs. Watch — and listen — for:

  • The washer fills and drains normally but won't agitate or spin. This is the classic symptom. The pump runs directly off the motor, so it keeps working even after the coupler fails.
  • A loud bang every time the motor reverses direction between agitate and spin cycles. That's the coupler working loose.
  • A humming or buzzing motor that isn't translating into any movement in the drum.
  • A burning rubber or plastic smell during a cycle.
  • Black rubber shavings under the machine. If you ever spot these, the coupler has already started shedding material internally.

Why Replacing It Early Actually Matters

It's tempting to keep running a washer with a "mostly working" coupler, especially if it's only making noise occasionally. But putting it off tends to cost more in the long run:

A failing coupler can damage other parts. The repeated jarring and loose play from a worn coupler puts extra stress on the transmission and motor shaft. What starts as an  R150 part can turn into a much costlier transmission or motor replacement if it's left too long.

Wet clothes sitting in a drum that won't spin isn't just inconvenient — it's exactly the kind of load imbalance that stresses other components even further while you wait to get it fixed.

Couplers are inexpensive and readily available as OEM parts. Given how cheap and common this fix is, there's little reason to let a known coupler issue run until it takes something bigger down with it.

A Word of Caution on DIY Replacement

Replacing a motor coupler is a manageable job for a confident DIYer, but it's also one of the most common jobs where people run into trouble afterward — usually from the coupler not being fully seated on both the motor and transmission shafts, or the drive pump not reseating correctly when the cabinet goes back on. If your washer hums but won't spin after a coupler swap, or the pump stops working, it's almost always down to a seating or alignment issue rather than a second broken part. If you're not confident opening up the cabinet, this is a quick job for a technician and worth getting right the first time.

Bottom Line

A worn coupler is one of the most common reasons a perfectly good Whirlpool washer suddenly "stops working." Catching it early is the difference between a cheap, 20-minute part swap and a much bigger repair bill down the line. If your washer is filling and draining but not spinning, that's your sign — get the coupler checked before it takes anything else with it.

Radiation heat is when there is no direct contact between the food and the heat source.

Microwave ovens and infrared lamps are typical examples of this method of cooking.
Microwave ovens isn't really a heatsource, it's more a tipe of radio on steroids. The magnetron sends out radio waves which changes frequently at a supper speed and it also changes direction. This action confuses food molecules and it starts to vibrant, creating friction(heat). .

Convection heating is achieved through a combination of a element (heat source) and a fan (circulation unit). A fan moves the hot molecules generated by the element to the cooler areas creating a even distribution of heating. 
This even distribution of heat allows you to do baking on all the shelves inside a oven. Airfryers has become very popular because they are much smaller than the older convection ovens, easier to clean and less stowaway space is 

Conduction Heating is when there is a direct contact between the heat source (flame).

Conclusion 

While radiant heating neater and beter (looks) than a solid plate but conduction heating is more energy effection. The flame are directly on the spot compare to the electromagnetic waves that travels in all directions.
