This Week's Main Insight: Load Shedding Is Gone, but Power Problems and Festive Buying Still Test Your Appliances

International Market

I. GE Appliances' sourdough gadget makes TIME's Best Inventions of 2026.
On 15 October GE Appliances announced that FirstBuild's Sourdough Sidekick, co-created with King Arthur Baking Company, was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026. The same day, GE Appliances was named Large Manufacturer of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers. It's a good reminder that some of the most interesting appliance ideas now come from small, focused kitchen gadgets rather than the big white goods.

II. Haier's half-year results show where the growth is.
Haier Smart Home reported first-half 2026 revenue of RMB 152.12 billion and net profit of RMB 10.32 billion. The company says GE Appliances gained share in the US, Europe grew 4.9%, and South Asia grew 17.1%, with India up more than 20% in local currency. These are the six-month figures released in late August, but they remain the clearest picture yet of how the world's biggest appliance group is doing.

III. Big US fridge discounts show how hard brands are fighting for shoppers.
Earlier this month, Lowe's cut prices of 30 to 40% on big-ticket appliances: a Samsung Bespoke AI French door fridge from $3,399 to $2,299, an LG Craft Ice French door fridge from $3,699 to $2,199, a GE 27 cu. ft. French door fridge from $2,599 to $1,699, and a Whirlpool top-load washer and dryer at $499 each. That particular sale ended on 7 October, but it shows how aggressively the big brands are discounting ahead of Black Friday.

South African Market

I. Kwikot is gaining ground on the geyser market under Haier.
Haier says Kwikot's share of South Africa's water-heater market has risen by 10 percentage points since Haier acquired the brand. It's one of the clearest signs yet that Haier's local push is working, and it is happening in the one appliance category that drives most households' electricity bills.

II. No load shedding, but "load reduction" and power quality still matter.
Eskom has now gone more than 500 days without load shedding. But load reduction, the localised cuts in overloaded suburbs, still affected around 247,000 of 1.69 million customers in mid-September, with cuts typically scheduled for 05:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 22:00, and the programme is due to end in March 2027. Eskom's Homeflex tariff also moved to summer pricing on 1 September, with a lower peak rate for households on time-of-use tariffs. Repeated cuts and restarts are still hard on fridges, freezers and electronic controls.

From Me

This week's appliance: Chest Freezers and Fridges (and Power Cuts)

If you live in an area that still gets scheduled cuts, keep the freezer door closed. A full, closed freezer will keep food frozen for roughly 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24. When the power returns, switch off or unplug the appliance for about five minutes before it restarts, because a compressor trying to restart against built-up pressure is a common cause of burnt-out compressors and blown start components. A decent surge protector or a plug-in time-delay device is cheap insurance, especially for fridges and freezers that run all night.

Recycling reminder: With the festive season coming, upgrades and gifts are when old appliances and gadgets pile up. eWASA's festive-season advice is simple: sort what you have into working, outdated-but-usable and broken; sell or donate what still works; and take the rest to an authorised drop-off point. Their listed municipal drop-off sites include three in the Kouga municipality, which is handy if you are in the Jeffreys Bay or Humansdorp area. Wipe any data first, and when you shop, choose repairable, durable appliances with a proper warranty, so the next one lasts longer.

This Week's Main Insight: Running Costs and Disposal Costs Are Now Part of the Price Tag

International Market

I. LG leans on both premium and volume to keep its appliance business steady.
In its preliminary third-quarter 2026 results (7 October), LG Electronics reported revenue of KRW 23.83 trillion and operating profit of KRW 781.8 billion. LG says its home appliance division grew through a "dual-track" strategy aimed at both premium and volume buyers, helped by appliance subscriptions, online sales and business-to-business work, while manufacturing and logistics efficiencies offset higher material and shipping costs.

II. Samsung previews its next wave of AI cooling, fridges and laundry.
At its "The Brief" showcase in Hanoi on 15 October, Samsung presented updated AI-powered smart cooling, refrigeration and laundry appliances, plus commercial solutions, for Southeast Asia and Oceania. It also gave a first look at products planned for 2027, including new air conditioners. Hanoi is far from Gqeberha, but Samsung's regional showcases usually hint at what reaches South African shelves later.

III. Whirlpool collects a design award, and results are due next week.
Whirlpool's Spin&Load dishwasher rack was named a finalist and honorable mention in Fast Company's 2026 Innovation by Design Awards on 1 October, and the company added Karin Risi to its Board on 19 October. All eyes now turn to its third-quarter results, scheduled for 26 October, after a tough year for the brand.

South African Market

I. Samsung South Africa is running a "Samsung Week" promotion.
Samsung's local offers page is currently promoting its Bespoke AI range, including the side-by-side Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerator, the 16kg Bespoke AI front-loading washer and a wall-mount air conditioner, alongside dishwashers, hobs, hoods and microwaves. The page doesn't state start or end dates, so check the offer terms on samsung.com/za before you tell a customer a price is still on.

II. Eskom's proposed 8.8% hike would start on 1 April 2027.
Following on from the tariff consultation we covered earlier this month, the proposal is now clear: an average 8.8% increase from 1 April 2027, with fixed monthly charges for Homepower and Homeflex customers rising while the per-unit rate drops. Electricity prices have risen more than 900% since 2008, against roughly 230% inflation over the same period. With fixed charges rising, the running cost of an inefficient old appliance matters even more.

From Me

This week's appliance: Geysers

Your geyser is usually the biggest single electricity user in the house, so a few cheap habits pay off. Check the thermostat is set around 60°C (hot enough to keep bacteria out, but not wasting power), make sure the geyser and the first stretch of pipe are well insulated, and have a plumber test the pressure relief valve once a year. That last one is a safety item, not a nice-to-have, whether it's a Kwikot or any other make. If the water takes much longer to heat than it used to, the element or thermostat is usually the culprit, not the whole geyser.

Recycling reminder: International E-Waste Day (14 October) came with a new national message from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: "Fast Tech | Don't bin it, bring it!" South Africa generates over 360,000 tonnes of e-waste a year and only about 10% is properly recycled. The department says producers and recycling organisations are rolling out collection programmes in all nine provinces, with a focus on rural and peri-urban areas. Small gadgets count too: kettles, mini fans, chargers and cables. Free home collection is also an option. Vodacom and Circular Energy's recent challenge gathered more than 2,270 kg of e-waste from 114 home pickups, and Circular Energy is the same group behind LG's free collection service for old LG products.

This Week's Main Insight: Smarter Machines Are Coming, but How You Retire the Old One Matters Just as Much

International Market

I. Bosch's IFA 2026 line-up is now heading to retailers.
Bosch used Berlin's IFA show (4–8 September) under its "Factory of Quality" theme to unveil five headline products: a freestanding freezer with a Flex Door, new air fryers, the HomeCafé Series 4 (its first semi-automatic espresso machine), the OneFlow wet-and-dry vacuum that vacuums and mops in one pass, and a Series 8 washer-dryer. Bosch also extended its eco-friendly Green Collection to built-in ovens. Local availability and pricing haven't been confirmed for every market, so expect these to trickle out from late 2026 into 2027.

II. LG is shifting from selling appliances to servicing them.
Industry analysis of first-quarter 2026 results highlights LG's growing subscription model and service expansion alongside strong appliance sales, while noting that rising premium-appliance complexity favours skilled servicers. For independent repair technicians, it's a clear sign that connected, high-end machines will need more specialised diagnostic know-how, not less.

South African Market

I. Local shelves are filling with smart, efficiency-focused launches.
Euromonitor's 2026 look at the South African market points to a run of local launches: Samsung's Bespoke AI-connected dishwasher, Beko's EnergySpin washing machine, Bosch's Home Connect Series 8 built-in oven, and a Hisense campaign promoting multi-functional laundry appliances, while Defy and LG both lean on multi-functional microwave models. The common thread is connectivity and efficiency, both of which come with more electronics to service down the line.

II. Defy now sits under the Beko banner.
Defy's parent Arçelik has rebranded its global operations as Beko, now described as Europe's largest appliance company. Defy has committed a further R500 million to its local operations over five years, a notable vote of confidence in South African manufacturing, particularly for its solar off-grid appliance range.

From Me

This week's appliance: Front-Loading Washing Machines

Clean the drain pump filter every two to three months. It's usually behind a small flap at the bottom front of the machine: place a shallow tray and towel underneath, unscrew it slowly, and remove coins, hair, and lint. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of slow draining, error codes, and a machine that stops mid-cycle, and it takes five minutes.

Recycling reminder: International E-Waste Day is on 14 October, and South Africa's e-waste industry marks five years of producer-responsibility rules with the Local Circularity Summit and E-Waste Festival in Cape Town this week. Broken fridges, washers, dishwashers, and freezers have been banned from landfill since 2021. Here in Nelson Mandela Bay, eWASA manages the municipality's e-waste drop-off sites, and Pick n Pay has run a programme taking larger appliances at selected stores, which it passes on to E-Waste Africa. Always phone ahead to confirm a site takes large appliances before you load the bakkie.

This Week's Main Insight: IFA 2026 Confirms AI and Space-Saving Design Are Now Table Stakes

International Market

I. GE Appliances bets $1 billion on American manufacturing.
On 2 September, GE Appliances and the IUE-CWA union announced a $1 billion investment in its Louisville, Kentucky plant, aiming to make Appliance Park the largest home appliance manufacturing site in the US. It's a major statement about reshoring production at a time when import tariffs are already reshaping pricing across the industry.

II. Samsung leans harder into AI at IFA 2026.
Samsung picked up multiple IFA Innovation Awards this week for its Bespoke AI lineup, with judges highlighting the Bespoke AI Refrigerator's internal camera (which identifies groceries and suggests recipes) and its slim, zero-clearance installation. Samsung also previewed "Spatial AI" for SmartThings — appliances that don't just connect, but start understanding where you are in the home.

III. LG and Midea showcase next-gen cooking and space-saving tech.
At the same Berlin show, LG highlighted seven appliances built around AI, efficiency, and compact living — including a refrigerator with LLM-based voice recognition — while Midea unveiled its SpaceMaster built-in oven, using graphene heating elements to hit cooking temperatures up to 350°C with faster response times than conventional ovens.

South African Market

I. Miele flags a shift toward considered, long-term buying.
Miele South Africa's Brand Activation Manager says local shoppers are moving past short-term savings toward appliances chosen for reliability and efficiency — with handleless, fully integrated kitchens and steam cooking named as the two biggest local trends shaping 2026 kitchen upgrades.

II. Inverter and solar-hybrid models keep outselling legacy stock.
With the SA kitchen appliances market on track to hit $1.12 billion this year, industry analysts point to Defy's solar-hybrid fridge-freezer range — capable of running off-grid for up to 24 hours — as the clearest example of manufacturers designing specifically around load-shedding rather than treating it as an afterthought.

From Me

This week's appliance: Washing Machines

If your front-loader has started smelling musty, it's almost never the machine itself — it's a buildup of detergent residue and moisture in the door seal and drawer. Wipe down the rubber door gasket after every wash, leave the door slightly open between loads, and run an empty hot cycle with a washing machine cleaner once a month. It's a two-minute habit that saves you an expensive seal replacement down the line.

Recycling reminder: A report released this week marks five years since South Africa's e-waste landfill ban — and found that between 360,000 and 530,000 tonnes of e-waste is still generated here annually, with only 7–12% of it formally recycled. If you've got a dead fridge, washer, or microwave sitting around, eWASA's network of 1,000+ drop-off points (in partnership with retailers like Makro and Pick n Pay) will take it off your hands for free and process it properly — it genuinely makes a difference.

This Week's Main Insight: Efficiency Is Becoming the New Baseline, Not a Premium Feature

International Market

I. LG makes high-efficiency the standard, not the flagship perk.
At IFA 2026 in Berlin (4–8 September), LG Electronics is extending its top-tier energy-saving technology — previously reserved for flagship models — across its broader laundry, refrigerator, and dishwasher lineup, with many models exceeding A-grade ratings. The message from LG's Home Appliance Solution Company is clear: energy efficiency is moving from a premium differentiator to a portfolio-wide expectation, which should mean more affordable efficient options trickling down for everyone, not just top-spec buyers.

II. LG's Fit & Max design language spreads beyond fridges.
Also ahead of IFA 2026, LG confirmed its "Fit Space, Max Life" concept — previously limited to select refrigerators — is expanding into washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers. The idea is simple: smaller footprint, same or greater usable capacity. Worth watching if a client's kitchen or laundry space is tight but they don't want to compromise on load size.

III. Component supply is shifting closer to home.
Following on from GE Appliances' announcement that its next-generation connected laundry line will run on US-built Texas Instruments microcontrollers from 2027, more manufacturers are re-examining where their smart electronics get made. For repair techs, that likely means new control-board part numbers and diagnostics to learn as these units start reaching service life in a few years.

South African Market

I. KIC answers rising energy costs with a new efficiency-led washer.
In July, KIC South Africa (a Whirlpool brand) launched the KFL 812 GR — an 8kg front-loader with Steam+ and an A+++ energy rating. It's a clear sign that established local brands are leaning on efficiency-per-kWh as their main pitch against imported competitors, at a time when electricity tariffs remain the biggest factor in local buying decisions.

II. Hisense's Western Cape factory is its buffer against global price hikes.
While Samsung and other global brands warn of price increases from rising component costs, Hisense says its 27,000m² Atlantis facility — producing around 500,000 fridges and a million TVs a year — is helping it keep South African pricing stable by cutting reliance on imports. It's a good reminder for clients asking why some brands' prices are moving while others aren't: local manufacturing footprint matters more than ever right now.

From Me

This week's appliance: Refrigerators

Vacuum or brush down the condenser coils at the back or underneath your fridge every three to six months. Dust buildup on the coils forces the compressor to work harder to shed heat, which quietly pushes up your electricity bill and shortens compressor life — the same efficiency story brands like LG and KIC are chasing with new tech, you can get part of that saving for free with a five-minute clean.

Recycling reminder: LG South Africa runs a free e-waste collection and recycling service for old LG appliances through its Circular Energy partnership — a legal requirement under SA's EPR Regulations that most households never actually use. Samsung's trade-in scheme covers over 6,000 eligible devices too, not just phones. And it's worth knowing: since 2021, it's been illegal to send e-waste like old fridges, washers, and microwaves to landfill in South Africa — eWASA-licensed recyclers (Desco, Reclite, Wasteplan) and E-Waste Africa's 200+ drop-off points take household appliances free of charge instead.

I go into more detail on coil cleaning and other quick efficiency wins on the blog — worth a look before your next Eskom bill lands: highpoint.blogspot.com

Appliance Insights

Issue #2 | Curated by Pine Pienaar

Hey everyone,

Welcome to my insights of the appliance world. My main goal is to share tech insights, look past the shiny showroom marketing, and give you practical knowledge to keep your home running efficiently.

Today we are looking at how different electronic brands are interacting and examining the silent killer threatening modern kitchen and laundry setups. Let’s dive in.

🌍 The Big Trend: Global Brands Start Talking to Each Other

If you have ever felt frustrated because your home appliances require five different smartphone apps just to operate, a massive shift is happening. The global appliance industry is transitioning toward the Matter Protocol framework. This universal smart-home standard ensures that major appliances from completely different brands can seamlessly communicate inside a single ecosystem without requiring proprietary software.

How the brands stack up right now:

  • Samsung & LG: These two rivals have expanded their cross-brand compatibility. You can now monitor an LG ThinQ smart dishwasher or air conditioner directly through a Samsung SmartThings home hub interface.

  • Whirlpool, Maytag, & KitchenAid: This major manufacturing family is increasingly introducing automated diagnostics that pair with voice-activation networks like Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

  • Haier & Bosch: As the world's highest-volume appliance producer, Haier is embedding unified connectivity across its global lines, while Bosch is refining automated safety shut-offs that communicate directly with home solar battery banks to drop power draw when the grid is under stress.

🇿🇦 The South African Corner: The Local War for Power Efficiency

On the local front, South African households are demanding heavy-duty, long-term efficiency to combat rising utility tariffs. Premium brands are heavily re-engineering their equipment specifically for our local energy market:

  • Miele & Siemens: These premium names are focusing their marketing entirely on long-term resource savings. Miele’s eco-inverter washing machines and heat-pump tumble dryers are explicitly tested to handle gradual power startups, protecting your home setup.

  • Defy & Hisense: As local household staples, Defy and Hisense have expanded their ranges of solar-hybrid refrigerators and chest freezers. These units can automatically switch between standard power and low-voltage DC solar inputs without interrupting the cooling cycle.

  • SAMSUNG & Smeg: Samsung’s Bespoke AI refrigerators and Smeg's high-end ovens are rolling out with active energy-optimization algorithms that intelligently modify compressor cycles based on how often your family opens the doors throughout the day.

🔧 Pine’s Workshop Insight: The Silent Danger of "Electronic Rust"

In my workshop here in Port Elizabeth, the single most common failure I see in modern appliances isn't a worn-out mechanical motor or a broken pump—it is a fried Electronic Control Board (PCB).

Older, classic appliances relied on tough mechanical timers to click through cycles. Modern machines from brands like Whirlpool, Samsung, and Defy utilize highly sensitive microprocessors to manage everything. While these boards make appliances incredibly smart, they are exceptionally vulnerable to local power surges, voltage drops, and grid fluctuations.

Think of minor, daily voltage spikes as "electronic rust." They might not be powerful enough to completely blow your washing machine or fridge instantly, but every minor fluctuation leaves a tiny bit of degradation on the circuit board's delicate capacitors and resistors. Over time, these little dings add up until the board completely fails, rendering an otherwise perfectly healthy machine totally useless.

Want to know the best way to safeguard your appliances from power spikes? I have written a detailed, step-by-step breakdown on how to identify surge damage and choose the right protectors on the All Appliance Repairs Blog.
